Fun facts about rice

Rice around the world

Rice is an ancient grain

  • Rice has been feeding humans for over 7,000 years. The first rice cultivation is hard to pin down, but is thought to have originated in the region stretching from southern China across Thailand and Burma to Assam.
  • In Myanmar (formerly Burma), the average person consumes around 310 pounds (140kgs) of rice a year. In Canada we only average 18 pounds (8kgs) per person, per year due to a much more diversified diet.
  • Dainty’s first ever shipment of rice to Canada was from Burma in 1882
  • In India, rice is associated with prosperity and with the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi.

Rice water for hair

WHY? Rice water will make your hair smooth and shiny because it contains amino acids and vitamins, and some say it even helps your hair grow faster! This trick has been used in Asia for centuries.

  • HOW? So simple ! Rinse and strain your rice (if it’s not Dainty!) to remove any dirt or impurities that you don’t want to apply to your hair.
  • Mix the strained rice in a medium-sized bowl enough water to cover it. Swirl it around with a spoon until the water becomes cloudy.
  • Strain the rice, this time reserving the water in a plastic container or jug. Store the rice for later or cook it.
  • Cover the rice water container and let it sit at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours. Note: if you don’t use it after 24 hours we recommend disposing of it.
  • Fill a small container with the rice water for application. Keep the rest in your fridge.

How to use :

Apply the rice water on your scalp and your lengths after your shampoo and conditioner.

Let it sit for two to five minutes and rinse.

RICE IN YOUR SHOES

Rice is a natural desiccant, meaning it has the ability to absorb moisture from its environment. It might not be as fast as the hair dryer but it’s natural and saves energy.

Placing uncooked dry rice inside your shoes overnight (remove the insoles too) will help absorb unpleasant odors, dampness, and moisture!

SAVE YOUR PHONE!

Accidentally dropping your phone in water or spilling liquid on it can seem like a disaster. Whether it’s the pool, toilet, a puddle, or a cup of tea, liquid damage is a common threat to phones. But don’t worry—we’re here to help you save it.

Immediate Steps:

  • Turn Off Your Device: Power off your phone immediately to prevent short-circuiting.
  • Dry the Exterior: Wipe off any visible water with a dry cloth.
  • Place in Rice: Submerge your phone in a jar, box, or bag filled with uncooked rice for at least 24 hours.

Rice acts as a natural desiccant, meaning it absorbs moisture from its environment. By using this method, you might just be able to salvage your phone. There is science to it!
