Craving Asian-inspired dishes that are easy to prepare for a quick lunch or weeknight meals? This spicy tuna rice bowl is a simple recipe that brings together vibrant ingredients and perfectly cooked rice to satisfy your culinary ambitions. Discover how simple it is to create this famous dish made of aromatic rice that’s packed with taste and nutrition.

Choosing the right rice

When making a spicy tuna rice bowl, you’ll need sticky rice. The foundation of this dish is a medium-grain rice that can absorb all the toppings and sauces without losing its structure.

The rice wine vinegar will then create the perfect level of acidity that will balance out the spicy tuna topping. By mixing rice vinegar with a pinch of salt and sugar, you can season the rice and create a subtle, tangy undertone.

Why we love this spicy tuna rice bowl recipe

This delicious meal option is not only quick and easy to make in minutes but also provides a nutritious meal. The beauty of all Asian dishes and rice recipes lies not only in their flavour but also in its versatility.

You can personalize the topping by adding ingredients that fit your taste, dietary restrictions, or mood. The core of the dish, however, remains the tuna and rice combination, which offers both texture and a burst of flavour in every bite. The added seaweed enhances the umami taste, competing with the best Japanese seafood restaurants!

Spicy tuna topping ideas

One fantastic option is fresh toppings such as English cucumber or carrots for a refreshing crunch. The cucumber will balance the heat from the sriracha. You can either slice it thinly or julienne it for a more delicate bite. For an additional layer of umami and crunch, sprinkle some crispy rice made from long-grain white riceor chili crunch on top.

If you’re looking for a little more richness, try adding avocado slices. This creamy element will balance out the spiciness of the tuna mixture. You can even drizzle a little extra sesame oil or rice vinegar over the ripe avocado for an added boost. Edamame, white sesame seeds and black sesame seeds will add a bit of crunch and a nutty flavour that complement any quality fish.

Lastly, let’s experiment with other sauces, like a regular mayonnaise or a spicy mayo sauce. A teaspoon of lemon juice or lime juice, tamari sauce or even a spicy sauce made of sweet chili can add a kick to your spicy tuna bowl. The key is balancing spiciness, sweetness, and acidity while playing with textures like creaminess, crunch, and softness. For an additional umami flavour or an additional spice level, use additional toppings such as pepper flakes, like chili flakes, roasted seaweed flakes, a Serrano pepper slice or a jalapeño slice.

Storage and reheating tips

To enjoy your spicy tuna rice recipe later, store the sushi rice and raw fish separately in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, microwave the rice with a splash of water, and for the tuna topping, simply add a little sesame oil to keep its creamy texture.
