Long & Wild Rice, Barley and Split Pea Soup in a Jar

Preparation

Step 1

Layer dry ingredients in the order listed above in a quart-sized (1 liter) mason jar.

Step 2

Tip: Use a funnel to add the ingredients to the jar. This helps to layer the ingredients evenly.

Step 3

Seal and decorate for gifting

Step 4

TO COOK: 

  1. Add the contents of the jar into a pot and fill with 12 cups water.
  2. Bring to a boil, skim impurities if necessary, and lower heat to simmer. Allow to cook for 45 minutes, or until the rice and peas are tender. Add more water if the soup is becoming too thick.
Note from the chef

Optional when cooking: Sauteing a small onion and 450gr of lean ground beef in olive oil in your pot before adding in the jarred ingredients will make for a heartier soup.
